Bats play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. They contribute to insect pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal. These unique animals are nocturnal, use echolocation to navigate and hunt, and are the only mammals capable of true flight. Bats represent more than 20% of the mammal species worldwide. Unfortunately, bat populations are declining due to threats such as disease, habitat loss, and climate change. Join Samantha Cronk to explore the amazing world of bats – learn about the local species, their unique characteristics, their ecological significance, and ways we can contribute to their conservation.
Samantha is the Natural Resource Technician for the Westchester County Parks Conservation Division and is completing her master’s degree in Environmental Science and Policy at Pace University. She is currently leading a project to create a bat species inventory in the county parks using acoustic monitoring, aiming to identify species of special concern in the local area.
